About Lipscomb University

Lipscomb University is a private, coeducational, liberal arts university in Nashville, which is the county seat of Davidson County and the capital of the U.S. state of Tennessee. During the 2008 census, the population of Nashville-Davidson County, was estimated at a number of more than 626 000 inhabitants, fact which makes Nashville the second most populous city in the state after Memphis.

Lipscomb University was founded by David Lipscomb and James A. Harding, in 1891, first starting as Nashville Bible School, later becoming David Lipscomb College and David Lipscomb University, afterwards, adopting its current name, as simply Lipscomb University, in 2005, 7 years after Lipscomb attained Level III (master's degree-granting) status.

Today, the university offers numerous educational programs, in various fields of study, also offering a wide range of academic programs in the arts and sciences, most students matriculating as majors in education, biblical studies, and business. Lipscomb has been highly ranked by several significant publications, such as U.S. News & World Report, which ranks Lipscomb University 21st among Southern Master's degree-granting institutions, including it on the top up-and-coming Master's universities in the South, among "2010 America's Best Colleges".

Athletics

Lipscomb University's athletic teams are known as the Bisons, who compete NCAA Division I, in the Atlantic Sun Conference, including in basketball, baseball and volleyball. The Bisons became, perhaps, best known for their women's basketball team, on November 13, 2007, when the team defeated Fisk University 123-22 in one of the most lopsided games in NCAA history.
